This session explores Linda Nathan's book, “When Grit Isn’t Enough”, which investigates five assumptions that dominate our thinking about education, revealing how these beliefs mask systemic inequity. Drawing upon her experiences as the founding headmaster of Boston Arts Academy, Boston’s only public high school for the performing arts, Linda Nathan reflects on the ideas she and others have perpetuated about education: that college is for all, that hard work and determination are enough to get you through, that America is a land of equality. In this session, Linda shares her research and facilitates conversation among participants to help them identify and develop ways to address roadblocks to their students' post-secondary success. Participants will gain greater understanding of these assumptions as they have been internalized and manifest in their schools and organizations.
