What happens when we create the conditions for students to be mentored by peers and coached by adults to discover themselves as scientists, historians, writers, readers, mathematicians, and more? Students at the Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School experience multi-age classrooms in Division 1 (~grades 7-8), Division 2 (~grades 9-10), and Division 3 (~grades 11-12). Students are empowered by design thinking approaches both in the model they are experiencing and through the projects in which teachers invite students to engage. At the same time, everyone experiences cycles of apprenticeship and mentorship; new students are welcomed in and acculturated to Parker largely and positively by their slightly older peer mentors. A skill-based and teacher created curriculum drives student growth. Much like their students, educators engage in design thinking as they create, experiment with different strategies, and evolve their work over time. Join us to learn more about these practices and the strong school-wide structures that undergird their success.
