How do students experience the hard work we do as educators? Do our high hopes and good intentions come through, or is the student experience something else entirely? Placing the student experience at the center of the conversation illuminates the gap that often exists between our best intentions and their lived experience. How can we close that gap? Students are people first, and people flourish in some environments and struggle in others. During our time together we will stay centered on the student experience in order to identify the attributes of school and classroom culture that give students the best chance to flourish. This project is not guesswork or based on intuition and a few anecdotes. Our session will be grounded in the findings of over four decades of psychological research that clearly identifies the three keys to shaping student-centered cultures. While widely supported by researchers, the positive potential of this work has been slow to trickle down to practitioners like school leaders and classroom teachers.
