Schools claim to foster collaboration, but how do we create truly collaborative classrooms in a conscientious and intentional way? Effective collaboration is much more than just asking students to work together. It involves defining your classroom values, teaching students to communicate effectively, and creating an environment that allows for creativity and the flow of ideas. In order for a class to be completely centered on teamwork, students must buy into each of these components, as well. In this session, I will describe the course I designed at Concord Academy, Topics in Engineering: Introduction to Principles and Processes of Design, in which students embark on a semester of collaborative team projects utilizing Design Thinking. I will lead session participants through the same process I use in my course which guides students as they define shared classroom values for collaborative efforts and determine how to evaluate each other’s contributions to group work.
