Clinicians and Educators Unite: Academic Engagement with Anxious, Avoidant Adolescents

Given the tremendous neurological changes characteristic of adolescence, educators and clinicians have a critical window of opportunity to support students in their development of a strong sense of confidence and competence in and out of the classroom. Students who are impacted by anxiety and depression are particularly susceptible to school avoidance, disengagement, and difficulties focusing and sustaining motivation. The result is a cycle of delays in academic and social-emotional growth, low confidence, and apathy. By applying principles of educational therapy, positive psychology and neuroscience, in combination with the power of a student-centered clinician-teacher collaborative model, students are provided with an opportunity to build rapport, to embrace opportunities for “successful failures,” and to seek challenge, despite discomfort. We’ll discuss techniques to create a safe and nurturing class environment where anxious students develop comfort with vulnerability and change. The importance of relationship-building and a strengths-based approach will be highlighted as essential features for building students’ skills and confidence.
